The Dumb Are Mostly Intrigued By The Drum

So we've made it clear into September (OMG, Halloween is right around the corner) and this year has been one of the best as far as the quality of films released so far. And we haven't even started Oscar season which will undoubtedly bring us some more good stuff. So to preempt the barrage of films surging this way, here are my top 5 films released so far this year:

5. Wall-E

I was expecting that this film was gonna be good but I didn't expect what it ended up being: A silent film with so much heart that it leaves you with a good feeling when you leave the theater. You know that age old movie quote "A feel good movie"? Wall-E is the manifestation of that very quote. Pixar has had a track record that rivals any and this one has to rank up there as one of the very best films they've ever done.

4. Iron Man

So the news was that Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah, who also goes by Tony Stark & Iron Man (among a whole slew of nicknames), was to make a cameo in the Iron Man film at Jon Favreau's request. When the film was released, all we saw was the Tony Stark bumping the emcee's video on his private plane. A little disappointed but still, it was cool that the director threw that in there. But with the upcoming DVD release on Sept. 30th, we get a little expanded role from the rapper. Check out the clip as Pretty Tony gives Tony Stark a little gift. So tomorrow is the big day of our first event so I will continue to use this blog as a promotional machine and I don't care what you say! I'm sorry, I do care what you guys say! I apologize for the lack of posts these last couple of days, just trying to get this thing going has sucked up all my time. That, plus there's been a relatively stagnant amount of cool shit happening in the nerdosphere, quite frankly. Hopefully, we'll get back on track next week!

So Iron Man was released in May and made a shit ton of money. Not even a week after it release, Marvel had announced Iron Man 2 for the summer of 2010. The director, Jon Favreau, is at this pint not involved whatsoever in the deal. So what's the deal? Well, it seems like even though Favreau delivered what at this point is the biggest movie of the summer, Marvel Studios head David Maisel is not willing to give Favreau the money he deserves. So after enduring all the bullshit Marvel movies, we finally get a film worth of the material and they're is ready to fuck it all up again and begin making the same mistakes from the past. That's when we end up with shit like this, and this, and don't forget this. Although the fanboy in me got all giddy when those upcoming release dates were announced last month, realistically, there is no way a quality film can be made and meet those deadlines. There's no way. So I pray that Maisel wakes the fuck up and realizes what needs to be done to keep this ball rolling in the right direction and gets the right team formed. And that means Favreau gets what he deserves: Iron Man 2.

Not as cool as Mighty Muggs (yes...yes they are) but man, these figures look pretty cool. The new (the released a Wolverine already) Upper Deck Subcasts are for pre-order over at Sideshow Collectibles for $75 and you can go here to check out Iron Man and here for Spiderman. Now that Marvel has taken the reigns of all its IP's via the Marvel Studios production company, they seem poised to release a steady flow of films to quench your superhero thirst. With the huge numbers Iron Man pulled this weekend, it should come to no surprise that they're already planning for a sequel. But furthermore, more info was released via Yahoo! Financial about other projects: Iron Man & Thor in 2010 followed by TWO Avengers themed films in 2011. Yeah, it's good time to love comics.

Roque may not have stayed past the end credits of Iron Man(when your 6ft GF says its time to pick up your yorkie and tuck her in, YOU DO THAT SHIT) but now he, and you 'aint gotta. Thank you io9, for super secret special saucing us with the magical 11 herbs and spices of Samuel Jackson, or Sam Jack as he will henceforth be dubbed, as Nick Fury. Yes it is a super crappy cell phone video but meh, whaddayagonnado? It is Sam as Nick(ultimate Nick Fury for continuity's sake).
While we speak of Iron Man, a word to the wise Roq, purhapsually a good friend, nay, hetero-lifemate would have been a better choice for the Iron Man sneak preview. I'm jes sayin.
I wouldn't have pestered you with questions about the tech or Marvel canon, I would have even bought the Mr. Pibb & Red Vines. Frankly there is nothing she could have offered that I can't match. NOTHING. Check the video here or above.

Word from Sumner Redstone, executive chairman Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp. and Brad Grey, Ceo Paramount Pictures confirmed to Entertainment Tonight, plans for an Iron Man sequel which would be released in 2010 if the current Iron Man film lives up to their expectations.

Word is that while press screenings did not have that certain scene included after the credits, the official theatrical Iron Man film that was released last night IS expected to have the deleted scene included. So be sure and stick around once the credits start rolling!

Iron Man - 4 Stars (out of 5)
When I was a kid, Marvel released a book called The Iron Man Manual showcasing some of the technical aspects of building a flying suit or armor (Dave, if you can find this for me...) and I remember the impact it had on me: As soon as I was done going through it, I wanted to build my own suit of armor. Much to my disappointment, I have yet to reach that goal. But my desire to see a live action Iron Man has been fulfilled by director Jon Favreau, flanked by Robert Downey Jr. There were a couple of scene's in this film where I honestly felt like I was going to shed a tear (remember, I'm an sentimental bitch) as I saw what was transpiring before my eyes. To see Stark blasting foes with his repulsor blasts, shooting missiles out of his armor, punching through walls....pure bliss. The ending battle was only okay but the rest of the film made up for it and the S.H.I.E.L.D. setup was awesome. No War Machine armor, no Sam Jackson as Nick Fury, no Incredible Hulk crossover but overall, one bad ass film that will, if your a hardcore Iron Man fan, blast you like Unibeam to the face. SUPERIOR TECH!

April 29th brings us the release of Grand Theft Auto 4 for the Xbox 360 & Playstation 3. Which means that adverts will soon flood your web browser, television, print and every other medium that the marketing guru's can muster. Microsoft just announced that they will be putting the same amount of advertising dollars behind this game as they did with Halo 3. And we all know what happened when that game was released, right? Low box office returns. (The commercial posted up there is actually from the UK). So does Iron Man have to worry about Niko and his band of merry men jacking a portion of their cash flow? According to some analysts, Iron Man will feel the presence of the almighty GTA 4 due to the fact that they are both aimed at the same audience. I don't know if the dent will be significant (I plan on purchasing both the game & watching the movie the same week, but you know me.....I'm a nerd), but it will definitely be an interesting match to see the numbers the film puts up opening weekend. Game on, indeed!

Popular Science recently did a wonderful retrospective on the exoskeleton and they touched on the XOS exoskeleton. In doing so, they wondered how close we are, technology wise, to building a real life suit of armor like Tony Stark's invention so they visited Marvel Comics and the people at XOS to find out. Step Brother
Not a massive Will Ferrell fan has worked out well for me. Yeah, he's good and when he's on top of his game (Anchorman), the man can be funny as all hell. But I thought the best part of Talladega Nights was John C. Reilly so it pleases me much to see the two reunite to make this film. You can check the trailer out here.

Get Smart
Man, I used to love the original shit back in the days. I was a part of my daily intake right along with I Love Lucy & Price Is Right. The casting of Steve Carell was brilliant and I can never say no to Anne Hathaway. Throw in The Rock and Azamat from Borat and we got ourselves a winner. But being a TV remake, odds are that it's gonna suck. Preying on nostalgia rarely works but I still have hopes that the cast can pull this off. Fingers crossed, suckas! Check out the trailer here!


Iron Man
What can I say? Being an admitted Iron Man fanboy this movie will make a happy child outta me even if it treads onto Ang Lee's "Hulk" territory. Sex And The City
My SATC intake has mainly been from edited episodes on TBS and I can't help to wonder if I'd watched the unedited versions of the show (of which I've only watched around 6 or so) first I'd be a bigger fan. Another thing is that the stars of the show just all seem to remind me of different grade school teachers of mine and I just can't get past that (except for Charlotte...Mmmmm, yummy!). But from the few episodes I have watched unedited....not too bad, honestly. Still kinda weird to see my 6th grade teacher talk about blowjobs and anal sex, though. Check out the trailer here!

Yup that's it.....okay one more. This past weekend I attended Wondercon up in San Francisco and was able to see some very cool shit. One of those was an early trailer for the upcoming "X-Files" movie which will be released later this year (I love me some X-Files!). They asked for no one to record or take pictures of it.
